Chapter Nineteen

Jo tried to concentrate on what Mr Johnson was saying. Something about how much things had changed since he had been up to Derbyshire when he was a teenager, cycling around the area and staying in youth hostels. She found herself drifting in and out of the conversation as she scanned the room for Eddie.

She couldn’t see him anywhere.

Nor could she see Malcolm.

Then, suddenly, she spotted Eddie. He was standing at the window holding a glass of wine looking outside intently. Jo desperately wanted to remove herself from her guest and go and see what was holding his attention. She could see that his hand was slightly shaking, and she hoped the glass he was holding was strong enough to withstand the grip he had on it.

Jo prayed Rebecca and Genevieve had left. From what Nikki had told her, the further away Genevieve was from her ‘father’ the better. She was only grateful that Eddie was only booked in for one night. First thing in the morning she would tell him there had been no cancellations and hopefully he would leave straight away, and everything could get back to normal.

As she looked at Eddie’s hardened face, it was unthinkable to her to imagine one’s own father behaving in such an abusive manner. She couldn’t help but feel a hint of resentment that her father, who had never harmed anyone in his life, had suffered a premature death while someone like Eddie was a picture of health. It was something she would never understand.

It seemed so often to be the way that people who behaved so badly got to live out their lives, untouched by the pain they caused. Jo could feel the bile rising in her throat at the thought that such a man was standing in their B&B, planning whatever he had up his sleeve.

Jo took another mouthful of her champagne, willing the alcohol to numb her senses. She just wanted to forget about Eddie, and her mother for that matter. Neither situation was doing much good for her current mood. It was the build up to Christmas. A time where she should have been merry, not dreading the coming days.

Mr Johnson suddenly burst out laughing at something he had said and Jo joined in.

‘So what do you think then?’ Mr Johnson asked looking at her with amusement.

Embarrassed, Jo felt the heat rise to her cheeks. ‘I… um…’

‘You haven’t been listening to a word I’ve said, have you?’

‘No, no, Mr Johnson. I was just getting my breath back.’ Jo tried to rack her brain, hoping that something about what Mr Johnson had said had sunk in. Something popped up. ‘No, I think you’re right. It’s ironic that the Tram museum at Crich is there, now they are being rebuilt everywhere. And you’re right. If governments had a bit more foresight, they wouldn’t waste so much money.’

Mr Johnson regarded her with narrowed eyes for a moment, then his face creased up into a broad smile.

‘I’m glad to find someone agrees with me, Jo.
